Understanding what you observe in terms of signs and symptoms indicative of a person’s health, why the symptoms are occurring, and whether or not these are “normal” for the person, will make it easier for you to give an accurate report.

It is not normal to have frequent colds, coughs, sneezes or trouble breathing.

You should notify a person’s health care provider if you observe:

A grayish/bluish color to the lips or nails may mean poor circulation as a result of heart problems. When a person has this symptom while exercising or develops chest, jaw or left arm pain you should immediately contact the health care provider.

Significant abdominal pain is considered normal and is not concerning.

A seizure disorder can occur at any time of life. When someone has seizure activity for the very first time, you should immediately seek medical attention.

Skin can tell us about what is happening in the body.

Seizure medication can cause or worsen osteoporosis (brittle bones), increasing the risk of fractures.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem seen in many people, especially if they are incontinent and wear protective underwear.

How a person acts can be indicative of how they are feeling. The most important thing to note when reporting observations to a physician is any change from a person’s “normal” pattern of behavior.
